Overview
Ponnani Port is about 61 km south of Beypore Port. It is a riverine port in the mouth of river Bharathapuzha. The southern bank is Purathur Panchayath and northern bank is Ponnani Municipality.
Ponnani port flourished under the rule of the Sultans of Mysore. Haidar 'Ali, Sultan of Mysore conquered northern Kerala in 1766 and established an outpost at Ponnani. His successor Fateh Ali Tipu (Tippu Sultan) developed the port at Ponnani for trade, and for strategic reasons. Tipu developed Ponnani as a major exporting centre in Malabar.
